The backer plate used on Abreco Wear Products is a low carbon mild steel (44W or A36).  Use a low hydrogen weld material with a low-heat-input welding method, such as shielded metal-arc welding, or gas shielded metal-arc (MIG).  Standard mild steel welding principles apply with the following recommendations:

Welding Electrodes/Wires:

Low hydrogen AWS E7018 electrodes.  Other grades such as E6013, E6011, E7014 and E7024 are also suitable.  Use only completely dry electrodes.

Gas shielded solid MIG wire - 3/64" (1.2 mm) dia. max.
Flux cored wire                      - 1/16" (1.6 mm) dia. max
Low hydrogen electrode        - 1/8"  (3.25 mm) dia. max   

CAUTION!  TOO MUCH HEAT INPUT MAY CAUSE CRACKING OF THE WHITE IRON WEAR LAYER OR DELAMINATION BETWEEN WEAR LAYER AND MILD STEEL BACKER.

  1. The substrate to which AbrecoPlate is to be welded should be flat with the weld area clean.
  2. No pre-heating or post heating of AbrecoPlate is required.
  3. Tack-weld AbrecoPlate into position.
  4. Stitch weld, doing no more than 2" (50 mm) steps at a time and alternating weld locations to minimize heat input.
  5. Do not weld continuously – continuous welding will increase heat input and may cause cracking, or delamination. If a full perimeter weld is required, follow the stitch weld procedure to fill in the missing weld area.
  6. Do not weld within 3/32” (2 mm) of the bond interface where the white iron wear layer joins the steel backer. Chromium contamination from the white iron will make mild steel welds brittle and prone to fail.
  7. Hard-facing over the structural welds to prevent washout is permitted however the same care should be taken to minimize heat input.
